Tips for healthy living

Healthy living covers a broad spectrum that includes physical, emotional, spiritual and social wellness. Healthy living improves the quality of life and reduces the risks of falling seriously ill (especially from illnesses that can be prevented)

Healthy living involves the establishment of long-term lifestyle goals and committing to healthy habits such as exercising, proper diet and maintaining proper mental health. There are several components of healthy living including

1.Nutrition

Nutrition is a vital component of healthy living. The type of food one eats determines their well-being, the ability to fight some diseases and the general longevity of the person. Proper nutrition involves having balanced meals that provide the necessary fuel to run body processes. A basic diet should consist of energy giving, bodybuilding, and protective foods as well as fluids (especially water). Healthy nutrition should be accompanied by healthy and hygienic food preparation and presentation practices.

2.Exercise

Physical activity is vital in aiding body processes such as conversion of energy to usable forms. Exercise may be anaerobic or aerobic. By keeping physically active and fit, the body maintains an essential balance in keeping a healthy body internally and externally.

3.Sleep

Research indicates that the body restores itself mostly during sleep. Getting enough sleep is critical in giving the body the much-needed rest as well as a chance for the cells to recreate themselves. Lack of sleep hinders normal body functions due to fatigue. For example, to achieve clarity of thought and a sharp mind, one needs to have a relaxed and well-rested body. For optimum functioning, health professionals recommend a regular sleep of 8 hours in every 24-hour cycle.

4.Relationships (social life)

No man is an island. Relating to people outside oneself and creating casual as well as deep relationships helps in alleviating stress and reducing loneliness. The social cycle is also essential in keeping abreast with the emerging news and keeping oneself updated. By forming these relationships, you discover the spiritual part of yourself and lead to establishing a deeper meaning for oneself. A healthy lifestyle involves developing and keeping quality relationships. Toxic relationships such as those with violence (physical and emotional) should be avoided as they cause depression, low self-esteem, and a poor self-image thus destroying the essence of healthy living.

5.Work

Healthy living involves engaging in constructive tasks that help in building you into a holistic individual. Work may include voluntary services or salaried employment. The particular work you chose to participate in should create happiness and fulfillment.

6.Leisure

Work and leisure go hand in hand. Healthy living encompasses learning when to take a break. Taking a break should happen regularly to give one the chance to unwind and prepare for the next work episode. Leisure time may be used to pursue social relationships and build networks or engage in hobbies and pursue talents.

7.Mental health

Maintaining mental well-being is crucial to healthy living. Our attitudes, beliefs, and thoughts affect a lot more than the brain. What we think affects how we respond to challenges, how we manage stress and our relationships with other people and ourselves. Therefore, to achieve healthy bodies, we have to start by acquiring a healthy mind. Practices such as positive autosuggestion, yoga, and meditation help in shaping positive attitudes leading to a better life by improving our outlook on life. Puzzles and word games are also crucial in developing problem-solving skills in the brain.

Maintaining a balance

For healthy living to be holistic, you should create a balance between all its components. For example, working too much may lead one to compromise such aspects as social relations and family leading to isolation, depression and lead to the development of poor habits such as negative thinking.
